Bio

Nannette was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She started playing flute at the age of 11, upon joining the University of Puerto Rico Elementary School’s Concert Band. She demonstrated a natural talent for it immediately but it wasn’t until age 15, when she saw a live performance by Néstor Torres and Dave Valentín at a Jazz Festival in Puerto Rico that turned out to be particularly inspiring for her, that she decided to take it more seriously.

She then went to join the University of Puerto Rico High School’s Advanced Concert Band and traveled to the United States for the first time to compete in High School Band Competitions. While still in High School, at age 16, she attended the Berklee in Puerto Rico Summer Program and her performance there earned her a scholarship for Berklee’s Five Week Summer Program, designed for High School students who wish to pursue further studies in music. She attended the program at age 17 and for the first time, she was able to completely immerse herself in her playing and performing skills, as well as bond with other students with whom she could share her passion for music.

Upon returning to Puerto Rico, she graduated from High School and entered the University of Puerto Rico, where she did extensive coursework in music and joined the University’s Symphonic Orchestra, as well as the Jazz Ensemble. Later on, she received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, Boston, as a full time student and in 2003, she transferred to Berklee where she had the opportunity to share the stage with artists such as Rubén Blades, Juan Luis Guerra, Eggie Castrillo and Víctor Mendoza. During this time, she also had the opportunity to gain professional experience performing with her Trio and with the group Plátano Frito in night clubs and a variety of activities and charity events in Boston, New Hampshire and Puerto Rico.

Nannette obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music from Berklee College of Music in 2006 and decided to return to Puerto Rico to become a music teacher, wanting to awaken students’ musical talents at an early age and inspire them to stay away from negative influences and pursue their dreams. Nonetheless, she never abandoned her true passion: performing.
